Does Non-Alcoholic Wine Have Alcohol? Understanding Less Than 0.5% ABV

Non-alcoholic wine is usually alcohol-removed, not alcohol-free
Most dealcoholized wine begins as traditional wine and then has alcohol removed until it falls below the legal threshold for non-alcoholic labeling. In the United States, that commonly means less than 0.5% alcohol by volume. The phrase matters: less than 0.5% ABV is very low, but it is not the same as zero.
That small remaining amount is comparable to levels found in some fermented foods and beverages, but people choose beverages for many different reasons. Some guests are avoiding alcohol entirely for medical, religious, pregnancy, recovery, or personal reasons. A refined host should make the information clear and let the guest decide what is appropriate.
Why any alcohol remains
Alcohol removal is a balance. Removing alcohol too aggressively can strip aroma and flatten texture. Gentle methods aim to lower alcohol while protecting the volatile aromatic compounds and structural cues that make wine feel like wine. The remaining less-than-0.5% level reflects that balance between compliance, flavor, and integrity.
Rayner Mansion’s position is direct: traditionally fermented, gently dealcoholized. The wine is not grape juice, and it is not a synthetic wine alternative. It is real wine that has passed through an alcohol-removal step after fermentation.
What to say to guests
The simplest language is the clearest: ‘This is dealcoholized wine and contains less than 0.5% ABV.’ Avoid implying that a bottle is safe for every person or every situation. Hosts do not need to make health claims. They need to provide accurate information, serve thoughtfully, and keep another option available for anyone who wants a true zero-alcohol drink.
Pregnancy and medical considerations
Anyone who is pregnant should ask their doctor before drinking dealcoholized wine. Rayner Mansion does not make a health claim either way. The right answer depends on medical guidance and personal comfort, and the bottle should be presented honestly rather than promoted as a health product.
